Coping with Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal symptoms can be a setback for those attempting to quit smoking.  But remember that they are a sign the body is healing, the withdrawal symptoms are usually short-lived, and they can be managed.  Here are some tips on how to cope:

  1.  Increased appetite :  Eat balanced meals, snack on healthy low-fat foods, and drink lots of water
  2.  Feeling Sad or Blue:  Use positive self-talk, speak to your quit coach or quit buddy about your feelings, speak with your doctor if this feeling doesn’t go away within two weeks
  3.  Restlessness:  Exercise, take a walk, and use relaxation techniques
  4.  Poor Concentration:  Avoid stress, take more but shorter work breaks, go for a brisk walk, split bigger projects into smaller tasks
  5.  Irritability/Aggression:  Go for a walk, take deep breaths and use relaxation techniques
  6.  Sleep Disturbance:  Take a hot bath before bed, avoid caffeine later in the day, and avoid napping during the day
  7. Lightheadedness:  Sit or lie down until the feeling passes
